Lawmakers protest FIRS Chairman’s Senate entry

On Wednesday, the Senate raised objections to the entry of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman, Zacch Adedeji, and consultants into the chamber.

This occurred after the Upper Chamber suspended its rules to allow Adedeji and the consultants to present an explanation of the Tax Reform Bill.

However, before their admission, a brief uproar broke out as some lawmakers voiced their opposition to the FIRS Chairman’s presence in the chamber.

Senators Ningi and Ndume raised objections to the Senate’s decision to suspend the day’s scheduled business and address an unrelated matter, despite its legitimacy.

A visibly frustrated Senator Ningi expressed, “The order clearly states that our business will follow what is listed on the order paper, and this is not on the agenda. This isn’t an issue that can just be introduced on the spot. Mr. President, you may have your way, but I will have my say. You can use the gavel, but I have my voice.”

“We are dealing with urgent issues. Normally, these could be postponed to another legislative day, but I implore you, in the name of God, and swearing by both the Bible and the Quran, to act in the best interest of the people. Are you suggesting that what a senator is saying here is mere rhetoric?”

The senators had initially planned to stage a walkout but later decided against it.

Shortly afterward, Senator Ndume, citing order 52, called for an apology from the Deputy Senate President for using offensive language against him, but his request was once again ruled out of order.
