Lawmakers reject Tinubu’s national award for Speaker Abbas

The House of Representatives has rejected the National Honour conferred on Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, alleging discrimination by President Bola Tinubu.

The lawmakers rejected the President’s decision to confer a higher honour on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, sparking a heated debate on the fairness of the awards.

The controversy erupted when President Tinubu announced that Senate President Akpabio and Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, would receive the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) award.

In contrast, Speaker Abbas and Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau were conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) award.

The lawmakers further resolved that, both leaders should be treated equally, citing the need to abolish the “upper chamber and lower chamber nomenclature” and emphasising that both chambers are equal.

The motion, signed by 360 members of the House, reflects the lawmakers’ determination to address the perceived discrimination.
