Los Angeles fires wreak havoc as winds further spread
The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles continue to expand, with the Palisades Fire threatening new neighbourhoods and forcing fresh evacuations. As the infernos rage for the fifth consecutive day, officials warn that worsening winds could ignite additional blazes, compounding the disaster that has already claimed 11 lives.
Since Tuesday, five separate fires have scorched over 37,000 acres (15,000 hectares) and destroyed approximately 12,000 buildings, leaving thousands homeless. The Palisades Fire, responsible for much of the destruction, has reached affluent areas near the Getty Center art museum and remains only 8% contained.
President Joe Biden likened the scene to a “war zone” after a White House briefing on the disaster, saying, “It reminded me of targets bombarded during wartime.”
As residents grapple with the devastation, criticism of officials’ preparedness and response has intensified. Nicole Perri, whose Pacific Palisades home was destroyed, expressed frustration, stating, “Officials completely let us down.”

Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered an independent review, highlighting the troubling lack of water supplies during the initial firefighting efforts. “We need answers,” he wrote in an open letter.
With reports of looting on the rise, a sunset-to-sunrise curfew has been imposed in evacuated areas, and the National Guard has been deployed to maintain order. Over two dozen arrests have been made, and some residents have resorted to organizing armed street patrols to protect their properties.
The fires have not spared high-profile residents, with actor Mel Gibson among those who lost homes in Malibu. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were seen comforting survivors, while other celebrities, including Paris Hilton and Anthony Hopkins, have reported property losses.
Firefighting efforts have been relentless, with emergency teams battling the flames around the clock. However, officials caution that the situation remains dire, with winds expected to intensify in the coming days.
Governor Newsom has called for bipartisan cooperation, urging incoming President Donald Trump to join him in surveying the devastation. Scientists have pointed to climate change as a contributing factor, warning that human activity is altering weather patterns and fuelling the frequency and intensity of wildfires.
