Maritime workers shut down operations in compliance with NLC’s warning strike
On Tuesday, the Apapa and Tin-Can Island ports, along with other ports nationwide, experienced a halt in operations due to the two-day national warning strike organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The NLC, in a recent statement, declared the strike as a means of protesting the hardships faced by the general public following the removal of fuel subsidy by the Tinubu administration in June.
Reports coming in from various ports in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Onne, Warri, and Calabar indicate that the ports have fully complied with the NLC’s directive, resulting in a complete standstill.

The President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, has confirmed that his union has fully complied with the NLC’s directive, emphasizing that there is no ongoing cargo evacuation process in any of the country’s ports.
However, some truckers have expressed concerns over this warning strike, highlighting the perceived lack of positive outcomes from previous NLC strikes dating back to 2001.
Mr. Dauda Akanni, one of the truckers who shared his thoughts with Vanguard on the condition of anonymity, believes that these actions only serve to escalate tensions without yielding any tangible progress.
