Mexico, Trump delay tariffs as China, Canada prepare retaliation

President Donald Trump has agreed to delay the planned tariffs on Mexico for one month, although the 25 percent tariffs on Canada and 10 percent tariffs on China are still scheduled to take effect.

Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed that an agreement had been reached with the Trump administration to postpone the tariffs, which were initially set to begin on Tuesday.

Under the terms of the deal, Mexico will deploy an additional 10,000 troops to the US-Mexico border to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking, including fentanyl. In return, Mexico will receive a temporary reprieve from the 25 percent tariffs that Trump had announced over the weekend. The US government will also assist in preventing the smuggling of firearms into Mexico.

The agreement comes shortly after Trump introduced tariffs of 25 percent on Canadian goods and 10 percent on Chinese imports. These measures have sparked concerns about global economic disruption, with stock markets reacting negatively.

Trump has defended the tariffs as a response to issues concerning migration and drug trafficking. He acknowledged that these tariffs, which impact more than a third of US imports, could cause some difficulties for American consumers.

Trump has been in discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as Canada plans to impose retaliatory tariffs of 25 percent on US goods. The two leaders are expected to continue their talks later today.

China has also strongly condemned the tariffs, pledging to take action against the US at the World Trade Organization. The Chinese government urged the US to “correct its wrongdoings” and focus on maintaining a positive bilateral relationship. In response to Trump’s allegations that China is complicit in the fentanyl trade through Mexico, the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized its strict narcotics policies and stressed that the US should approach the fentanyl issue in a “rational and objective” manner.

Trump has also hinted that Europe could soon face tariffs, saying actions against the European Union might happen “pretty soon.” European leaders have warned that a trade war with the US could harm both economies.
