Mighty Igor: World’s strongest wrestler, symbol of strength in the 1970s – 1980s

Mighty Igor was a prominent professional wrestler, particularly popular in Nigeria during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Igor was an American professional wrestler. He is a one-time American Wrestling Association World champion.

Mighty Igor, whose real name was Richard Joseph Garza, was known for his “friendly, but unintelligent” Polish character and his immense strength in the ring.

He was so popular in Nigeria that anything considered larger, more powerful, or heavy-duty was often nicknamed “Mighty Igor”.

He held the AWA World Heavyweight Championship for a week in 1965 after defeating Mad Dog Vachon.

The following year, he defeated Bob Orton to win the AWA Midwest Heavyweight Championship. In the 1970s, Garza wrestled as “The Mighty Igor” in the “Big Time Wrestling” circuit from Detroit, Michigan, performing with the likes of Bobo Brazil, The Sheikh, Pampero Firpo, “Big” Tex McKenzie, The Stomper, Flying Fred Curry, and The Fabulous Kangaroos.

Mighty Igor was also known for his unique ring attire, sometimes including nurse’s shoes and long underwear, and for sharing kielbasa with his fans.

He passed away on January 7, 2002, after suffering a heart attack in Detroit.
