Minimum wage: No going back on deadline – NLC
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed its ultimatum to state governors, insisting that the December 1, 2024, deadline for implementing the new minimum wage remains unchanged.
The confirmation came from the NLC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Benson Upah, in a text message to journalists in Abuja.
“Yes, the ultimatum still stands. Nothing has changed,” Upah stated, reiterating the union’s resolve to ensure compliance with the directive.
Several state governments are making last-minute efforts to meet the deadline.
In Sokoto State, Deputy Governor Alhaji Idris Gobir held a meeting with the state chapter of the NLC and urged them to submit their proposal for wage adjustments. The state NLC Chairman, Abdullahi Jungul, commended the government’s proactive approach, assuring civil servants of swift progress.
Zamfara State announced plans to commence payment of the new minimum wage after completing its ongoing verification exercise aimed at eliminating ghost workers.
In Taraba State, Governor Agbu Kefas approved the implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000, effective November 2024. Similarly, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has implemented the same wage adjustment following agreements with labour representatives.
While progress is evident in states like Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba, and Plateau, others, such as Imo and Cross River, are lagging behind. Negotiations in Cross River are ongoing, while Imo State has remained silent on the matter.
In Osun State, the committee tasked with wage adjustments has yet to unveil any package for workers, leaving many uncertain about their state’s compliance.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is also keeping a close watch on the developments across the country. National Vice President Tommy Etim assured workers that the TUC is committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the minimum wage.
The NLC’s insistence on the December 1 deadline underscores the urgency of addressing workers’ welfare amidst rising inflation. State governments now face mounting pressure to meet their obligations or risk industrial action.
