Mother drowns 6-year-old daughter in Bayelsa
Tragedy struck the Ukubie community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Monday, when a woman named Madam Stella drowned her six-year-old daughter, Rachael, in a moment of rage.
The heartbreaking incident, which has left residents in shock, occurred after Rachael defied her mother’s repeated warnings not to bathe in the river. Eyewitnesses reported that the young girl had gone to the waterfront, and when Stella found her there, she ordered her to leave. Rachael, however, refused to obey.
Despite her mother’s warnings, the child remained in the water, which reportedly triggered Stella’s anger. In a fit of fury, she allegedly grabbed Rachael by the hands and threw her into the river twice, ultimately leading to the child’s death.

When confronted by devastated community members, Stella confessed to the act, expressing deep regret. She said she never intended for her actions to result in such a tragedy. “I regret my actions. I never knew it would happen this way,” she pleaded, asking for forgiveness from the community.
A family member, Jeph Nation, expressed his deep sorrow, revealing that two members of his paternal family had already passed away this year, and while both losses were painful, this incident was especially heart-wrenching. “This one was so pathetic,” he said.
Videos circulating on social media show Stella surrounded by a crowd, confessing her actions in the Ijaw language. Another video captures her sitting in a boat next to her daughter’s lifeless body as it is transported away.
When reached for comment, the Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, confirmed that the incident had not yet been officially reported to the police.
