NAFDAC warns Bakeries against use of Saccharin and Bromate in Bread production

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to bakeries across Nigeria against the use of saccharin and bromate in bread production.

The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, made this known during a session at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum. She stated that bakeries found using these harmful substances would face severe penalties, including closure.

“This is where our post-marketing surveillance comes in,” she explained, adding that the agency routinely conducts inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.

Prof. Adeyeye revealed that several bakeries had already been shut down for using bromate, a prohibited chemical in bread production. The substance poses significant health risks to consumers.

She also highlighted the agency’s action against substandard water-producing factories, emphasizing the importance of hygienic practices.

According to the NAFDAC DG, the Regulatory Inspection Directorate plays a crucial role in verifying that products maintain the standards established at the point of registration. She noted that some manufacturers alter their production processes after receiving approvals, prompting the need for regular post-marketing surveillance.

“This ensures that what they brought to us is still what is in the market in order to maintain standards. That is what is called market control,” she added.

The agency continues to urge consumers and stakeholders to report suspicious or substandard products to maintain public safety.
