Nasarawa lawmaker narrowly escapes mob attack
Story from Ibraheem Hamza MUHAMMAD, Lafia
Nasarawa State House of Assembly (NSHA) member, David Maiyaki, has narrowly escaped a mob attack in Masaka village of Karu Local Government Area.
The member representing Karu/Gitata state constituency was attacked when angry youths stormed the palace of the traditional ruler of Masaka where the lawmaker was having a meeting to resolve issues bordering on chieftaincy tussles.
An eyewitness said the youths who were protesting against the demolition of some structures and buildings in the area took laws into their own hands as they destroyed many properties including cars.
Maiyaki however narrowly escaped the attack after he and those at the meeting ran for safety.
The protesters smashed the official Toyota Hilux vehicle of the lawmaker and other vehicles in the palace.
Findings showed that the protesters who were against the demolition being carried out in the area alleged that the traditional ruler of the area has a hand in the demolition.
Efforts to hear from the lawmaker proved abortive.
However, Police Spokesperson, DSP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident.
He said. “I can confirm that there was a protest by youths. When we received a distress call, the Commissioner of Police immediately deployed a team of personnel, and right now calm and order have been restored in Masaka.
He warned that the authorities wouldn’t condone any breakdown of law and order.
