Nasarawa North Senator Godiya Akwashiki dies at 52 in India
Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District, has died in India after a prolonged illness. He was 52.
Akwashiki, elected on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), passed away on December 31, 2025, at a hospital where he had been receiving treatment, according to a family source quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The source described his death as a “big blow” to Nasarawa North and the state at large, noting that the late lawmaker was widely regarded for his dedication to development, infrastructure, and human empowerment.

“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced due to his purposeful leadership,” the source said, adding that his projects were spread across the constituency. He was also noted as the only senator from the zone to be re-elected for a second term.
Before his election to the Senate in 2019, Akwashiki served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to the positions of majority leader and later deputy speaker.
Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki hailed from the community where he began his early life and political career. He was re-elected to the Senate in 2023.
Reacting to his death, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin extolled the virtues of the late lawmaker, describing him as a man of “exceptional calibre.”

“Throughout his sojourn in the Senate, he exhibited a high sense of patriotism and commitment to the Nigerian project through his various contributions in and outside the Senate,” Jibrin said. “Senator Akwashiki was a parliamentarian par excellence who worked tirelessly to improve the standard of living of the people of Nasarawa North and beyond.”
He extended his condolences to the senator’s family and the people of Nasarawa State, praying for strength to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.
