NAWOJ elects new officials in Bauchi

Rashida Yusuf of Bauchi State Television has emerged as the new Chairperson of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi chapter.

She emerged victorious in the keenly contested elections to beat Aisha Bamai of the ministry of information to clinch the position with a total votes cast of 36 against Bamai’s 13 votes.

The election which was conducted at NUJ secretariat was peaceful and cordial.

Those elected are Rashida Yusuf from Bauchi Television (BATV) as Chairperson, Talatu Landi from the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) as Vice Chairperson and Amina Ahmed from News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as Secretary.

Others are Ramah Mutashi Luka from Federal Radio Corporation (FRCN) Globe FM as Assistant Secretary, Diana Yohanna from ministry of information as Treasurer, Amina Abdullahi Mudi also from Globe FM as Financial Secretary, while Firdausi Bakondi from Albarka Radio will serve as Auditor.

In her acceptance speech, the newly sworn in Chairperson, on behalf of other elected officials appreciated members of the association for the support.

“I really thank God for sparing my life to witness this occasion and l thank all members for giving us their trust and support and l promise to take NAWOJ to greater heights,” she said.

Yusuf, who said that her priority would be training and training of members, said that her leadership would encourage young girls to take journalism as a career.

“Our members are leaving the profession and many are retiring so l would encourage young girls especially those in primary school levels to be interested in journalism”, she said.

The newly Chairperson assured that she would sustain the legacies of her predecessor Bulak Afsa, especially in the area of training.

“I will consolidate on what the former leadership has done,” she stated.

“We will collaborate with other organizations and agencies of government in the State to ensure that we give our members the training they require”, she added.

The Zonal Secretary, Tani Akas, in her remarks commended the electoral Committee headed by Fibi Kafi for the peaceful and organised election.

She called on the newly elected officials to provide a level playing field where everyone will be carried along.
