NDLEA arrests 160 suspects for drug-related offences in Yobe

The National Law Drugs Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yobe State said it has arrested 160 suspects for various drug-related offences within the last one year.

The Commandant, Yobe State NDLEA, Aliyu Yahaya stated this during a media briefing in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital while commemorating this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The United Nations has set aside the 26th of June of every year as the International Day for Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The theme for this year is “Addressing Drug Challenges in Health and Humanitarian Crisis”.

The commandant explained that among the suspected drug traffickers and users arrested within the one year includes 155 males and 1 female out of which 18 have been convicted.

He further explained that they have seized over 900 kilograms of substances that consist of cannabis, psychotropic substances both liquid and solid, heroin and cocaine among others.

The NDLEA Commandant added that “the total number of our council case is 92, during the period under review and we have two referral that is, those that we reffed to other NDLEA commands that has standard rehabilitation centres.”

Aliyu appealed to the Yobe state government to support the command, especially in the area of rehabilitation of drug addicts as the state lacks a functional rehabilitation centre.

He also solicited the cooperation from communities for the command to achieve its mandate in the fight against drug abuse as Yobe is second to Gombe in the North East, in terms of a high number of illicit drug trafficking and abuse cases.
