NGO sensitizes Gombe village on children’s attendance in schools

Story from Najibullahi ADAMU

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in Gombe state known as ‘Centre for Grassroots Community Education and Development’ has sensitised people in a Fulani community called Wuro Gare in Akko local government area of the state on the need to ensure that their children go to school regularly.

The NGO conducted the sensitisation when they paid a visit to Wuro Gare primary school in the village.

The programme manager of the NGO Idris Abubakar while addressing teachers, pupils and some parents during the event lamented that there was a low level of children enrolled in school in the area adding that even those who were sent to the school do not attend classes regularly.

He further revealed that in some of the classes, he found not more than 15 pupils, he called on the parents to stop sending their children on errands or assign them with works during school hours in order not to disrupt their studies.

“Parents should compel their children to go to school every school day. They should not engage them in other activities during school time. In this school, some pupils are not regular, this can affect learning negatively”. He stated.

According to him, the organisation was established with the objective of promoting education and children enrollment in schools especially in rural areas that still lag behind in terms of acquisition of education.

The NGO during the event donated a scheme of work and register books to the school to enable them to assess pupils’ attendance in classes.

Responding, the headmaster of the school Alheri Thomas expressed appreciation to the NGO for the visit and sensitisation saying it would help to encourage regular attendance among pupils.

She appealed to the government to continue to provide the school with facilities to make it conducive for teaching and learning.
