Niger State police arrest soybeans thief, vehicle snatcher

Story from Hamzat Ibrahim ABAGA

Police in Niger State have apprehended a suspect linked to a criminal conspiracy and robbery at Mokwa Division of the state.

The incident involved a truck carrying 700 bags of soybeans from Kano to Lagos, which experienced a mechanical failure near Tunga-Ruwa village via Mokwa.

A four-man gang armed with cutlasses and sticks, riding in a J5 Peugeot, targeted the truck, tied the boys in the vehicle, and stole a portion of the soybeans.

The police later intercepted the J5 vehicle around Lafiagi in Mokwa, leading to the arrest of Abu Abdulrahman, 33, from Kaduna State.

The suspect, during interrogation, implicated others and disclosed plans to transport the stolen soybeans to Kaduna. The police have arraigned the suspect in court and are actively pursuing the remaining members of the gang.

In a related development, police operatives in Minna arrested Abubakar Mohammed, 40, while attempting to drive a Honda Civic vehicle out of Kure market. Mohammed confessed to using a fabricated key to steal the vehicle, revealing his intention to deliver it to his receiver, Bashir Mohammed of Mando in Kaduna State. The suspect admitted to a previous car theft from the same market and disclosed selling it to Bashir for N200,000.

Mohammed claimed financial motives for farming, house construction in Wushishi, and marriage preparations. The case is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna, with efforts to extend the probe to Kaduna for the possible arrest of Bashir Mohammed.
