Nigerian Paralympian, Onyinyechi Mark, wins gold, sets new record

Nigerian powerlifter Onyinyechi Mark has achieved a historic milestone by winning the gold medal in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category at the Paris Paralympics.

On Friday, Mark lifted an impressive 150kg at La Chapelle Arena, setting a new Paralympic record with her performance.

Mark, 23, outshone her competitors, including China’s Cui Jianjin, who claimed silver with a lift of 140kg, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who won bronze with a 130kg lift.

This victory marks Nigeria’s first gold medal of the games and her exceptional achievement continues to bring pride to her country.

With this win, Mark joins Eniola Bolaji, who won a bronze in badminton, and Esther Nworgu, who earned a silver in powerlifting despite an injury, in contributing to Nigeria’s medal tally.

Later on Friday, Lucy Ejike will compete in the women’s up to 67kg category of para-powerlifting, aiming to add another gold to Nigeria’s count.

Ejike, a seasoned Paralympian, has previously won three gold medals and hopes to continue her winning streak.
