Nigeria’s young prodigy, Kanye, aims for Guinness World Record with largest canvas painting
Abuja’s JC Best International School has become a creative hub, drawing visual art enthusiasts eager to witness the ambitious project of 15-year-old Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, popularly known as Kanye. This exceptional teenager, diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, is setting his sights on breaking a Guinness World Record with his 12,303 square metre canvas painting.
Kanye’s record-breaking attempt began on December 9, 2024, and has since captivated onlookers. Each stroke on the massive canvas reflects his passion, creativity, and advocacy for individuals living with special needs. Despite the enormous task, Kanye remains undeterred, using art to express himself and champion awareness for autism.
The project, launched officially on November 21, 2024, is not just about breaking records. It aims to raise funds to build a state-of-the-art Autism Resource Centre in Abuja, spearheaded by The Zeebah Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides education, therapy, and specialised care for children with autism.
At a recent media forum, Zeebah Foundation board member Matlou Tsotetsi described Kanye’s endeavour as “groundbreaking,” highlighting its significance in redefining societal perceptions of individuals with special needs.
“Through his bold and inspirational pursuit, Kanye demonstrates that individuals with special needs have the potential to excel and redefine societal perceptions of ability,” she said.
Kanye’s mentor and art teacher, Kokab Farrukh, emphasized the importance of mentorship for children with autism.
“Every autistic child has a special talent,” she remarked. “If you have an autistic child, bring them to an expert to help discover and nurture their potential.”
Kanye’s ambitious project, titled “Impossibility is a Myth,” reflects his belief in overcoming challenges. The young artist’s canvas is expected to surpass the current world record of 9,652 square metres held by Emad Salehi.
His father, Mr. Tagbo Okeke shared the dual purpose of the initiative:
“This record attempt is not just about breaking records. It is also about raising awareness for autism and giving back to society by funding the Autism Resource Centre project.”
Through this initiative, Kanye hopes to inspire a global audience while contributing to the autism community. The proposed resource centre will feature advanced facilities, including vocational training and creative expression programmes, ensuring a brighter future for children with autism in Nigeria.
“This record-breaking attempt will shine a global spotlight on the need to create opportunities for individuals with special needs to thrive,” Tsotetsi added.
As Kanye works diligently to complete the world’s largest canvas painting, his story continues to inspire. His art, which explores themes of colour, emotion, and human connection, stands as a testament to the boundless potential of individuals living with autism.
