NLC counters Tinubu on minimum wage resolution, insists on N250,000

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that the organised labour did not reach an agreement on a specific amount for the new minimum wage.
NLC was responding to President Bola Tinubu’s assertion that a consensus had been reached on the new national minimum wage.
During his broadcast on Democracy Day, Tinubu claimed that a common ground had been found on the contentious issue of the new minimum wage between the Federal Government and organised labour.
He announced that an executive bill would be forwarded to the National Assembly to formalize the agreement on the new minimum wage.

He stressed that his administration opted for a democratic approach rather than dictatorship in addressing the demands of labour unions.
However, in a statement, the acting President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, affirmed that the Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage did not come to an agreement on the minimum wage by the time negotiations ended on Friday, June 7, 2024.
Adeyanju stated, “Our demand remains at N250,000 (two hundred and fifty thousand Naira) only, and we have not been provided with any compelling reasons to alter this stance, which we believe is a significant compromise by Nigerian workers during the negotiation process.”
NLC emphasized that it needs to clarify the situation for President Tinubu, Nigerians, and stakeholders as it seems that those who briefed him on the negotiation outcome did not provide the accurate information.
The statement continued, “It will be exceedingly difficult for Nigerian workers to accept a national minimum wage figure that equates to a starvation wage. We cannot be employed and yet remain in extreme poverty.”
