NLC declares indefinite nationwide strike, urges youth to join in protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has initiated an indefinite nationwide strike, commencing today, September 22, 2023, as reported by Daily Report Nigeria.

This industrial action serves as a protest against the federal government’s failure to meet the labour union’s demands.

These demands primarily include the provision of palliatives to mitigate the harsh consequences of fuel subsidy removal.

It is worth noting that the NLC had previously engaged in a two-day warning strike on September 5 and 6 to draw the government’s attention to their concerns.

However, with the President Bola Tinubu-led government’s inability to address these demands within the stipulated 14-day ultimatum, the NLC has escalated their response to an indefinite strike action.

This development was announced by Benson Upah, the Head of the Department for Information and Public Affairs at the NLC, in a statement released on Friday.

Upah said that the government has not met any of the union’s demands and that the strike “can begin any moment from now”.

He also warned that the strike would be strictly enforced, unlike the two-day warning strike where compliance was not strictly followed.

“Do you know of any good general who put out his plans in the public before he strikes? We are fully ready to strike,” Upah said.

The NLC also urged the youths to join in the action, reiterating that the country is for them, and they should stand up and take it back.
