NNPC, CBN, FIRS workers receive December salaries as other civil servants lament non-payment

Federal civil servants nationwide are expressing discontent over the delay in receiving their December 2023 salaries, leaving many to mark Christmas without the anticipated funds hindering full celebrations.

However, workers in revenue-generating agencies like NNPC, NPA, NIMASA, NCC, CBN, and FIRS, among others, received their December salaries on time, Daily Trust revealed.

The unexpected situation has adversely affected families, particularly those without savings, impacting traditional celebrations characterised by merriments, elaborate cooking, and visitations.

Various federal ministries, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHoCSF), and the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) have reported similar challenges.

Federal universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and associated institutions throughout the country are also affected.

Disgruntled workers, in interviews with Daily Trust, expressed disappointment over the government’s failure to pay salaries during the Christmas season.

Many highlighted the financial strain and the impact on their ability to partake in traditional celebrations. The excitement generated by a 50% discount on transportation was dampened by the lack of funds in their pockets, preventing many from utilising the subsidy for travel.

Civil servants voiced concerns about the negative consequences of the delay on their Christmas celebrations and anticipated challenges in January, especially when schools resume.

Some lamented the absence of additional interventions or bonuses traditionally provided to workers at the end of the year.

A lecturer at the University of Abuja underscored the government’s obligation to pay salaries, expressing dissatisfaction with the delay during a crucial celebration.

Another lecturer criticised the administration, stating that the removal of subsidies and claims of savings should not justify delayed salary payments.

The sentiment was echoed by a teacher at the Federal Government Girls College in Gombe State, who described the Christmas as dull due to the absence of December salaries.

Responding to inquiries, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation emphasised that they were not responsible for salary payments. The spokesperson for the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation assured that the process was ongoing, with workers expected to receive their salaries soon.

A top government official confidentially revealed that the delay resulted from a technical glitch, assuring that salaries would be disbursed by Monday. As federal workers await resolution, concerns persist about the impact of financial uncertainties on the well-being of civil servants and their families during the festive season.
