NNPCL begins rehabilitation of pipelines, depots

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced the commencement of a major rehabilitation project aimed at overhauling pipelines and depots to strengthen the nation’s energy infrastructure.

Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer (CCCO), disclosed this during an interview with journalists on Saturday. According to Soneye, the project, expected to be completed within two to three years, will address long-standing challenges in petroleum distribution.

“Upon completion, the rehabilitation will ensure sustainable crude oil supply to refineries, seamless product distribution via pipelines, reduced reliance on trucks, improved energy security, lower transportation costs, and fewer road hazards caused by fuel tankers,” Soneye stated.

He further revealed that the initiative will be executed through a Finance, Build, Operate, and Transfer (FBOT) model, with strategic partnerships and innovative financial approaches to address funding limitations.

The project includes replacing obsolete pipelines, constructing new ones, and modernizing storage terminals. Advanced technology will also be deployed to enhance pipeline security and prevent vandalism.

Soneye highlighted the significant progress already made, such as the successful rehabilitation of the Old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries by the end of 2024. He noted that work on the new Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries is at advanced stages, underscoring NNPCL’s commitment to ending fuel importation and transforming Nigeria into a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

“This rehabilitation marks a critical step in achieving self-sufficiency in refined petroleum production,” he added.
