Story from Najib SANI, Bauchi
The National Population Commission (NPC) has stated that it would number all structures in Bauchi local government area of Bauchi state before the conduct of the next population and housing census.
The federal commissioner of the NPC in the state, Ibrahim Darazo stated this Wednesday during an advocacy visit to the chairman of Bauchi local government, Mahmud Babamaji, ahead of the demarcation exercise of areas in the local government.
He said the demarcation exercise which would commence on September 4th is the most important aspect aimed at making the census easy and preventing malpractice in the upcoming population and housing enumeration by the commission.
According to him, the commission had so far conducted the demarcation exercise in 19 out of the 20 local governments, saying they would round-up with the Bauchi local government because it is the biggest in the state.
The commissioner noted that in the last census held in the country, a headcount of people was done, adding that the new enumeration would capture houses too.
“This time around, there will be population and housing census. Residential and commercial areas will be identified too and in preparation for that, every structure will be numbered in the state.
“We, therefore, solicit the support of the local government council to our staff so that the exercise will be successful,” Darazo said.
Responding, the chairman of the local government, Mahmud Babamaji who described population census as a vital tool for economic and development planning, promised that the local government would create awareness to the people of the area on the exercise so that they would give maximum cooperation.
He said stakeholders such as imams, pastors and traditional leaders and the media would be used in the sensitisation.
“We will provide enabling environment, accommodation and food to your workers who will conduct the exercise,” he pledged.
