NYSC withdraws Corps members from Benue after herders’ attack

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Benue State has confirmed the withdrawal of corps members from Mbaa community in the Kwande Local Government Area due to ongoing attacks.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC in the state, Yahuza Adamu, explained that the decision was made following repeated attacks on the community.

Reports indicate that suspected armed herders have killed over 20 individuals, including 16 farmers whose bodies were discovered in River Katsina Ala.

Addressing concerns from parents and guardians, Adamu reassured them that the NYSC in Benue State remains vigilant and dedicated to the safety and welfare of all its corps members. He emphasized that the NYSC is working closely with security agencies to ensure their protection.

The statement read, “Following the continuous attacks on Mbaa Community, which shares a border with the Republic of Cameroon, the NYSC withdrew all corps members from the area and has not assigned any there since.”

Adamu further stated that a headcount conducted by the NYSC Kwande Local Government Inspector confirmed that all corps members in the area are safe and accounted for.

He also noted, “Corps members serving in Jato Acka Turan, which is distant from the affected community, are not facing any security threats.”

As part of its policy, the NYSC consistently takes proactive measures to reduce risks and ensure the safety of its corps members.

“Parents and guardians are assured that NYSC Benue State remains committed to the safety and well-being of all corps members and will continue to collaborate with security agencies to safeguard them. We encourage parents and guardians to stay informed through official NYSC communication channels,” Adamu concluded.
