OAU mourns loss of promising 100-level student to suicide

A tragic incident occurred at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, as Salako Treasure, a 100-level student from the Department of Entrepreneur, took her own life.

It was reported that she consumed a substance suspected to be sniper and was found dead inside an uncompleted building in the Lagere area of the town on Wednesday evening. Beside her lifeless body lay a bottle of sniper.

According to findings, Salako had been experiencing emotional trauma, which some of her friends and acquaintances were aware of, prior to the unfortunate incident.

Confirming the news, Abiodun Olarewaju, the Public Relations Officer of the University, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of such a promising young lady under such circumstances.

He emphasized that although the incident took place outside the campus, the university, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Bamire, was deeply saddened by the loss of a student at such a tender age.

“We urge Nigerians to look out for one another. It is disheartening that she chose such a tragic path, allegedly due to depression. Those around her who were aware of her struggles should have guided her to seek help from an elder or a professional who could assist with her psychological and emotional well-being. We extend our condolences to ourselves, especially the parents who have lost a bright young lady. It is important to remember that life is full of ups and downs,” he said.

“We should not allow emotional, psychological, or academic frustrations to drive us to such extreme measures. The remains of the deceased have been taken away, and we have involved the police,” he added.

Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, confirmed the evacuation of the body, which has been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital.

She stated that an investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
