Obasanjo fires daughter over lateness
Former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo recently shared how he once dismissed his daughter from his farm due to her lateness, a decision that sent a powerful message to his employees.
He recounted the incident during a visit from Dr. Dayo Israel, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Management at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta. The visit took place at Obasanjo’s Penthouse residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex in Ogun State.
Obasanjo recalled that shortly after his tenure as Head of State, his daughter, who was studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, joined his farm for practical experience during a vacation. On her first day, she arrived at 7:15 a.m. instead of the usual 7:00 a.m. Despite issuing a warning about punctuality, she was late again the following day. Without hesitation, Obasanjo sent her back home. This action left a lasting impression on his employees, who remarked, “If Baba could do this to his daughter, who are we?”

Obasanjo used this story to advise Dr. Israel, urging him to be ready for challenges and, if necessary, to make difficult decisions to ensure success in his leadership role. He emphasized that no effective leader can succeed without occasionally stepping on toes. The former president encouraged Dr. Israel to maintain fairness, justice, and humanity even in tough situations.
Obasanjo also praised Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, the Medical Director of FMC Abeokuta, for his outstanding achievements over the past seven and a half years.
Dr. Israel, in turn, commended Obasanjo’s wisdom and wit, acknowledging him as an invaluable figure in guiding the transformation at FMC Abeokuta. The new chairman expressed his commitment to turning the hospital into a world-class institution, with an emphasis on transitioning the facility from the national power grid to renewable energy and fostering partnerships.
Dr. Israel’s familiarization visit also included meetings with local royal leaders, such as the Alake, Osile, and Olowu, who offered their blessings for his successful tenure. Additionally, he visited Dr. John Ade Abolurin, the former Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
