2027 Elections: Tinubu orders appointees to resign by March 31
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees seeking to contest in the 2027 General Elections to resign their positions on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a statement by Dewan Nengak Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, citing provisions of Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to the statement, the instruction is contained in a circular signed by George Akume and issued by Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.
The directive applies to all categories of presidential political appointees intending to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for elective offices. These include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, parastatals, commissions, and government-owned companies.
“All affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation not later than March 31, 2026,” the statement said.
President Tinubu noted that the measure is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, promoting transparency, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.
He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
