Fika Emirates Sallah Durbar: A symbol of unity, peace and cultural heritage (pictures)

The historic city of Potiskum was awash in colors of tradition, royalty, and cultural pride today as the Fika Emirate hosted its annual Sallah Durbar at the Emir’s Palace. The grand ceremony, a hallmark of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations in Northern Nigeria, served as a vibrant display of the emirate’s rich heritage and unity.
Presiding over the event was the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Dr. Muhammad Abali Ibn Muhammad Idriss, who also serves as the Chairman of the Yobe State Council of Chiefs. Dressed in regal attire befitting his status, the Emir received a thunderous ovation from thousands of subjects, dignitaries, and visitors who gathered at the palace grounds to witness the spectacle.
The Durbar commenced early in the morning with the traditional Hawan Sallah (horseback procession). Hundreds of horsemen, clad in colorful flowing robes and ornate turbans, galloped into the palace square in a rhythmic display of equestrian skill. They were accompanied by camel riders, foot soldiers, and troupes of traditional musicians beating talking drums and blowing trumpets, creating an electrifying atmosphere that echoed through the streets of Potiskum.
Upon arrival at the palace, the Emir took his seat on the royal dais under a large canopy, surrounded by his high chiefs and councilors. The core of the ceremony involved the formal reception of greetings from various tiers of the traditional hierarchy.
In a structured and solemn procession, District Heads from across the emirate approached the throne to pay homage, reaffirming their loyalty and presenting reports on the state of their domains. They were followed by holders of various traditional titles within the emirate, each displaying the unique regalia associated with their offices. Finally, Ward Heads from the grassroots level presented their respects, symbolizing the strong bond between the throne and the common people.
Throughout the proceedings, Alhaji Dr. Muhammad Abali Ibn Muhammad Idriss received well-wishes for the Eid celebration from religious leaders, government officials, and community representatives. In his address to the gathering, the Emir expressed gratitude to Allah for the peace and stability enjoyed in the emirate. He used the occasion to call for continued unity, hard work, and adherence to moral values among his subjects, emphasizing that the spirit of Sallah should extend beyond the festivities to foster lasting community development.
“The strength of Fika lies in our unity and our shared commitment to progress,” the Emir stated, while acknowledging the contributions of the district and ward heads in maintaining law and order. “Today is not just about celebration; it is a renewal of our covenant to protect our culture and uplift our people.”
The event drew attendees from across Yobe State and neighboring regions, underscoring the Fika Emirate’s significance as a cultural beacon in Northeast Nigeria. The Durbar concluded with prayers for the peace of the emirate, the state, and the nation, as the royal procession dispersed, leaving behind a community rejuvenated by the splendor of tradition.
