{"id":1771,"date":"2026-03-22T16:08:43","date_gmt":"2026-03-22T16:08:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neptuneprime.com.ng\/old\/?p=1771"},"modified":"2026-03-22T16:08:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-22T16:08:43","slug":"horrific-and-barbaric-remi-tinubu-calls-for-justice-over-assault-of-women-at-delta-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neptuneprime.com.ng\/old\/2026\/03\/22\/horrific-and-barbaric-remi-tinubu-calls-for-justice-over-assault-of-women-at-delta-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Horrific and Barbaric\u201d: Remi Tinubu calls for justice over assault of women at Delta festival"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Sunday condemned the assault of women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement personally signed by her, Mrs Tinubu described the viral footage showing girls being chased, stripped, molested, and subjected to degrading treatment as \u201chorrific\u201d and \u201cbarbaric.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She emphasised that while Nigeria\u2019s diverse cultures and traditions are deeply respected, no custom justifies violating the dignity or freedom of any woman or girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI watched the horrific viral footage emerging from Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, showing girls physically and sexually assaulted, subjected to degrading and barbaric treatment during what was supposed to be a community festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhilst I hold deep respect for the diverse rich cultures and traditions that make us who we are as a people, I believe that no such tradition or custom grants any man the right to violate the dignity or freedom of any woman or girl,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The First Lady urged all relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable under the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI commend the Nigeria Police Force for the arrests already made and urge all relevant authorities to ensure that all perpetrators face the full weight of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also called on the victims to seek appropriate medical and psychological support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI pray for your healing, peace and strength at this difficult time,\u201d Tinubu added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident occurred on Thursday during the Alue-Do Festival, a traditional community event in Ozoro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disturbing videos that surfaced online showed groups of young men pursuing women and female students, tearing their clothes, groping them, and assaulting them in broad daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event reportedly included a traditional rite that restricts women\u2019s movement, with those found outside during certain hours allegedly targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local leaders, including the Ozoro Kingdom, have distanced themselves from the violence, insisting it does not represent authentic custom and that criminal elements hijacked the celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delta State Police Command has responded swiftly, arresting a total of 15 suspects so far, including a community head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said preliminary investigations indicate the assaults were carried out by criminal elements exploiting the festival, not part of any legitimate cultural practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n    <div class=\"xs_social_share_widget xs_share_url after_content \t\tmain_content  wslu-style-1 wslu-share-box-shaped wslu-fill-colored wslu-none wslu-share-horizontal wslu-theme-font-no wslu-main_content\">\n\n\t\t\n        <ul>\n\t\t\t        <\/ul>\n    <\/div> \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Sunday condemned the assault of women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.
