{"id":2187,"date":"2026-04-01T12:53:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T12:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/neptuneprime.com.ng\/old\/?p=2187"},"modified":"2026-04-01T12:53:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T12:53:20","slug":"fg-launches-%e2%82%a620m-annual-prize-for-outstanding-student-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neptuneprime.com.ng\/old\/2026\/04\/01\/fg-launches-%e2%82%a620m-annual-prize-for-outstanding-student-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"FG launches \u20a620m annual prize for outstanding student Researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Government has unveiled a new national laureate prize programme that will reward exceptional student researchers, with PhD candidates set to receive up to \u20a620 million annually for outstanding academic work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the initiative, describing it as a bold step toward promoting academic excellence and positioning research as a driver of national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the scheme, doctoral graduates will receive \u20a620 million, while master\u2019s degree winners will get \u20a610 million, and outstanding undergraduate dissertations will attract prizes of at least \u20a65 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a statement by the ministry\u2019s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the programme aims to elevate the value of academic research and place it on par with other high-impact sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alausa said the initiative reflects a shift in national priorities, with intellectual achievement and innovation taking centre stage. He added that research outputs from students could provide practical solutions to Nigeria\u2019s economic and industrial challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programme will be funded by the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) and its partners, ensuring sustainability without placing additional financial pressure on government resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 10-member National Laureate Prize Committee, chaired by Abubakar Sambo, has been inaugurated to oversee submissions, screening, and selection of winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maiden edition is expected to open for entries in May 2026, with evaluations scheduled between June and September, while winners will be honoured at a National Laureate Gala in November in Abuja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the government has also adopted a results-driven model for its \u20a612 billion National Digital Economy Research Clusters programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the initiative would link funding to measurable outcomes and policy relevance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that the three-year programme would allocate about \u20a61.5 billion to each thematic cluster, with participating institutions expected to generate research that directly informs national policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tijani added that each cluster would be supported by postdoctoral fellows and PhD students, while collaborations with international researchers would help expand capacity and funding opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government said both initiatives signal a new direction for Nigeria\u2019s education sector, where research is not only a graduation requirement but a pathway to innovation, national recognition, and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n    <div class=\"xs_social_share_widget xs_share_url after_content \t\tmain_content  wslu-style-1 wslu-share-box-shaped wslu-fill-colored wslu-none wslu-share-horizontal wslu-theme-font-no wslu-main_content\">\n\n\t\t\n        <ul>\n\t\t\t        <\/ul>\n    <\/div> \n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government has unveiled a new national laureate prize programme that will reward exceptional student researchers, with PhD candidates set to receive up to \u20a620 million annually for outstanding academic work.
