Paul Biya, Cameroon\u2019s long-serving leader, has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President of the Republic and Head of the Armed Forces, placing him at the heart of the nation\u2019s political and military leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The appointment was confirmed in an official presidential decree dated April 4, 2026, which also named Franck Biya as Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the decree, the president\u2019s son will occupy multiple influential positions within the country\u2019s governance structure. \u201cMr Franck Emmanuel BIYA is appointed Vice President of the Republic of Cameroon,\u201d the document stated, adding that he will simultaneously oversee the armed forces and play a central role in defence administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officials said the appointments were made in line with constitutional provisions and national defence laws, noting that the decree would be published in the Official Gazette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The development comes shortly after Biya, 93, was sworn in for an eighth term in office following a highly contested election. Official results showed that he secured 54 percent of the vote, defeating opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who polled 35 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bakary rejected the outcome, alleging electoral fraud and insisting he was the rightful winner\u2014claims dismissed by the government. The election sparked protests across the country, drawing international scrutiny and raising concerns about Cameroon\u2019s democratic process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the backlash, President Biya described the election as credible and commended the electoral body and security forces for maintaining order, even as critics accused authorities of using excessive force against demonstrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Subsequently, the Constitutional Council threw out several petitions challenging the results, citing lack of sufficient evidence or jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Having ruled Cameroon since 1982 after succeeding Ahmadou Ahidjo, Biya remains one of Africa\u2019s longest-serving leaders. However, the elevation of his son to such powerful roles has intensified concerns among critics, who view the move as a consolidation of power within the ruling family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
