The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended senior officers overseeing the Lagos-Seme border commands over alleged extortion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a statement on Friday, Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS spokesperson, said the move comes after online reports accused some immigration officers along the Lagos-Seme corridor of misconduct \u201cbordering on extortion\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The spokesperson stated that Kemi Nandap, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, had \u201ctemporarily relieved the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties\u201d pending the outcome of an investigation into the incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Akinlabi said Nandap unequivocally condemned the actions depicted in the reports, describing them as \u201cunacceptable\u201d and in \u201cdirect violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement said the investigation would be comprehensive, aimed at identifying all officers involved and ensuring \u201cappropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe service wishes to reassure the general public, that it remains committed to delivering professional, transparent, and efficient services at all points of entry and exit,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NIS also urged Nigerians to report misconduct by its officers through official channels, including its social media platforms and 24-hour contact centre lines, noting that internal mechanisms were being strengthened to uphold service standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
