Ooni’s ex-wife, Prophetess Naomi, faints in prison

Reports indicate that she was promptly rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The former queen and founder of Wings Foundation had been remanded in custody following a devastating stampede at a funfair she organised at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan.
The tragic incident, which occurred on December 24, resulted in the deaths of at least 35 people, including children.
Despite being absent from court on December 24 due to health concerns, Prophetess Naomi was ordered to spend Christmas Eve in Agodi Prison. Seven others, including the event organisers and the school principal, were also remanded.

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the transfer of the case to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, for further investigation. A Deputy Commissioner of Police has been assigned to lead the probe.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Palace of the Ooni of Ife extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and the Oyo State Government. In a statement issued by the Ooni’s spokesperson, Moses Olafare, the monarch expressed grief over the incident while recalling Prophetess Naomi’s previous charitable activities.
“While at the Ile Oodua as queen, Miss Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi demonstrated love and care for children through similar events, executed with passion to bring joy to indigent families,” the statement read. The palace assured its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at bringing solace to affected families and strengthening safety protocols for public events.
Hamzat Oriyomi, one of the organisers, revealed that crowds began gathering at the venue as early as 5 a.m., despite the event’s scheduled start time of 10 a.m. “People forced their way into the premises, overwhelming security measures. The situation spiralled out of control before law enforcement could intervene,” he said tearfully.
The stampede has reignited discussions about the enforcement of safety measures at public gatherings. The Ooni’s Palace urged authorities to prioritise rigorous adherence to safety standards, particularly at events involving children.
As investigations continue, the tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the need for proper planning and crowd control at large-scale events to prevent further loss of life.
