Osimhen named GQ Turkey sportsman of the year
Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been honoured as GQ Turkey’s Sportsman of the Year at a black-tie ceremony held in Istanbul on Wednesday.
The annual awards, organised by the Turkish edition of the international lifestyle magazine GQ, celebrate exceptional achievements in sports, film, music, and other creative fields.
Since joining Galatasaray, the 26-year-old has become a fan favourite and a major contributor to the club’s domestic success. In his debut season, Osimhen scored 37 goals and provided seven assists in 41 matches, helping the club secure both the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup titles. His outstanding performances led Galatasaray to complete a permanent transfer from Napoli for a record €75 million, the highest transfer fee in Turkish football history.

Although injuries have slowed him this season, he has continued to impress, scoring 11 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions.
Osimhen has also remained a key figure for the Nigerian national team. After missing the first four World Cup qualifying matches, he returned to score six goals in five games, guiding Nigeria into the play-offs. He added two more goals in the semi-final win over Gabon before an injury limited his involvement in the final against DR Congo, where Nigeria missed out on the 2026 World Cup following a penalty shootout loss.
He is expected to lead the Super Eagles’ attack at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
In his acceptance speech, Osimhen expressed gratitude to GQ, Galatasaray, and supporters worldwide, saying:
“I want to say a big thank you to GQ. I can’t forget my Galatasaray family. This means so much to my family and me. I appreciate everyone who has supported me. I will continue to do my best for my family, for Galatasaray, and for the fans all over the world.”

The event also recognised several other notable personalities. Turkish actor Aras Aydın was named International Achiever of the Year, actress Sinem Ünsal received the Woman of the Year award, British-Turkish singer-songwriter Edis was honoured as Music Person of the Year, and Bahtiyar Büyükduman was recognised as Chef of the Year. Eleven additional awards were presented across different industries.
