Osinbajo, Akpabio, Saraki, governors, honour Segun Awolowo at funeral service

A host of prominent political leaders, former office holders, and state governors gathered in Lagos for the funeral service of Segun Awolowo, grandson of the late statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The service, held at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, drew an array of dignitaries who paid glowing tribute to the late lawyer and public administrator.
President Bola Tinubu was represented at the ceremony by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who described Awolowo as a public servant of “exceptional passion, discipline and purpose.” He praised Awolowo’s achievements, particularly as the former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and later as Secretary of Nigeria’s national committee for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). According to him, Awolowo’s efforts demonstrated a strong belief in economic cooperation and a prosperous future for Nigeria and Africa.
Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife were in attendance, alongside Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who hailed Awolowo as “a bridge-builder” whose influence extended across regions and sectors. Akpabio recalled his personal connection with the deceased, describing him as a lawyer of great intellect who carried the Awolowo legacy with humility. He added that although the family lost a father and grandfather, “heaven has gained an angel.”

Several state governors, including Babajide Sanwo Olu of Lagos and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, joined in paying tribute. Sanwo Olu described Awolowo as a man of “quiet strength” and a pillar within his generation, while Abiodun highlighted his contributions to diversifying Nigeria’s economy through non-oil exports.
Also present were former Governors Bukola Saraki, Gbenga Daniel, James Ibori, Adeniyi Adebayo, as well as business leaders, traditional rulers, diplomats and members of the Awolowo dynasty.
Segun Awolowo, who died on November 20 at the age of 62, was widely praised for his commitment to national development and his dedication to public service. His death has been described as a major loss to the country, particularly within the economic and policy circles where he played key roles.

He was laid to rest amid heartfelt tributes, prayers and reflections on a life marked by service, humility and a continuation of the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most influential families.
