Outrage as security operatives allegedly extort youths at gunpoint

A disturbing incident involving alleged extortion and harassment by security operatives has sparked outrage in Aboh Mbaise, Imo State.

Reports suggest that more than 50 young people were forced at gunpoint to transfer money from their bank accounts to designated POS account numbers at a checkpoint on the Enyiogugu Mbaise Road.

Eyewitnesses have condemned the actions, which they claim have become a recurring ordeal in the area. Many residents are now calling for immediate intervention from community leaders, including traditional rulers like Eze Leo Nwokocha, to put an end to the alleged abuses.

The extortion has reportedly forced many young people to avoid the checkpoint altogether, often choosing to travel at night. This decision, however, exposes them to greater risks, such as robbery and kidnapping, which have been prevalent in the region.

Stanley, an eyewitness, called on the Imo State Police Command to investigate the allegations and ensure justice for the victims. “This is unacceptable. The lives and safety of our youths are at stake, and the authorities must act swiftly to address these issues,” he said.

The ongoing insecurity in Imo State, which includes incidents of armed robbery and kidnapping, has added to public frustration. Despite efforts by the state government and security agencies to tackle these issues, many residents feel that more needs to be done to protect the community.

In response to the allegations, the police spokesman for Imo State, Henry Okoye, acknowledged the complaints and assured the public that an investigation is underway. “Necessary steps have been initiated to look into this matter, and any officers found culpable will face severe sanctions,” Okoye stated.
