Outrage in Delta community as notorious criminals escape from police custody
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen Olufemi Abaniwonda, has summoned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ovwian/Aladja Division, CSP Bulus Musa, and his team over the escape of two notorious criminals from police custody.
The move follows a petition by the Aladja Community in Udu Local Government Area, addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, demanding accountability for the jailbreak.
A senior officer from the State Command, who spoke anonymously, revealed on Sunday, “The CP has summoned the DPO and officers on duty for investigation. This incident appears to be a case of sabotage by some bad elements within the system. The CP is determined to ensure that all responsible parties are held accountable, and he has ordered the immediate re-arrest of the escaped criminals.”
The petition identified the escaped suspects as Ovakporaye Jobome, alias “Rogers,” and Debi. They were apprehended on December 31, 2024, by the Aladja Security Crack Team (ASCT) after a surge in criminal activities in the area. With assistance from Honourable Andrew Ekwetafia Gbise JP, Secretary of Udu Local Government Council, the suspects, along with two others—Kelvin Dukuye and Philip Faka and ammunition were handed over to the Ovwian/Aladja Police Station.
Confessional statements from the suspects were reportedly documented in video and audio formats.

However, on January 4, 2025, police officers informed the Aladja Community that two of the suspects, Jobome and Debi, had escaped custody. The news provoked outrage among residents, who accused the police of negligence and possible complicity in the escape.
The Aladja Community Council described the fugitives as “among the most dangerous criminals in the region” and demanded their immediate re-arrest. The council also called for disciplinary action against the officers involved in the incident.
In their petition, the community urged the Inspector General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to take decisive action to restore public trust in law enforcement and address growing security concerns in Aladja and its environs.
