Oyo govt launches maintenance manual for PHCs
The Oyo State Government has launched maintenance manuals for Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Oyo State, encouraging residents, particularly those in rural areas, to access quality and affordable healthcare in fully functional facilities.
Dr. Wasiu Olatubosun, the Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, shared this announcement in a press release.
Dr. Bode Ladipo, the Commissioner for Health, made the call in Ibadan on Monday and emphasized that the Oyo State Government has invested significant resources in upgrading PHCs.
The objective is to ensure that each political ward has a viable healthcare centre on.
During Governor Makinde’s first tenure, 210 PHCs were renovated, and the remaining 351 PHCs will be completed in the near future.
Dr. Ladipo acknowledged the workforce migration from this region to more economically prosperous areas and stated that the government is taking steps to address this challenge by strengthening local resources to meet the needs of healthcare practitioners.
He reiterated the Oyo State Government’s commitment to maintaining all healthcare facilities, ensuring they remain functional even after successive administrations. To this end, the government has compiled a small manual for the maintenance of the new facilities.
Dr. ‘Funmi Salami, the Special Adviser on Health and Chairperson of the Governor’s PHC renovation steering committee, stressed the importance of a good maintenance culture to extend the lifespan of infrastructure in Oyo State.
She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to providing quality healthcare to all citizens through the renovation of 351 primary healthcare centers, one per ward, across the state, elevating them to category 3 PHCs. A category 3 PHC typically consists of about 13 rooms equipped with portable water and electricity.
According to Dr. Salami, proactive maintenance is crucial for the functionality and longevity of PHCs. The maintenance manual will assist end-users in regularly performing preventative maintenance.
In response to the shortage of healthcare workers in the country due to brain drain and other factors, the committee has been tasked with finding innovative solutions to staff PHCs in the short, medium, and long term.
Notable stakeholders present at the event included Engr. Ademola Aderinto, the Special Assistant on Environment and Technical Lead of the Governor’s PHC renovation steering committee, Permanent Secretaries from the Ministry of Health and Local Government, ALGON Chairman Hon. Sikiru Sanda, ALGON executives, Dr. M.B Olatunji (Executive Secretary of the Primary Healthcare Board), Dr. Sola Akande (Executive Secretary of OYISHA), zonal chairmen of the Women Development Council, local government Medical Officers of Health, the Provosts of the College of Nursing and Midwifery, and the College of Health Science and Technology.
