Panic as FG raises alarm over new COVID-19 variant detected in 29 countries
There is growing concern across Nigeria as the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has sounded an alarm over the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant. The variant, which is spreading rapidly, has been confirmed in 29 countries globally, prompting urgent calls for heightened vigilance.
The XEC variant, first identified in Australia, is the latest in a series of evolving COVID-19 strains. Experts have noted that it demonstrates a growth advantage over other circulating variants, raising fears of its potential impact on global health.
This development was highlighted in a letter dated December 5, 2024, addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors by Dr. O.N. Anuma, the Permanent Secretary and Head of the Teaching Hospital Division.
In the letter, Dr. Anuma stated: “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. This variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
He further urged all hospitals nationwide to activate alert systems immediately and adopt a high index of suspicion for patients presenting COVID-like symptoms. The directive also called for enhanced monitoring and the timely sharing of data among health institutions and the Federal Ministry of Health to facilitate an effective response.
The letter added: “Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be vital for effective response strategies.”

The XEC variant, first reported in June in Germany, has since been identified in countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and others. By September, it had infected over 600 individuals worldwide. Scientists have suggested that the variant’s new mutations may improve its transmissibility, but existing vaccines are expected to continue offering protection against severe cases.
The Federal Ministry of Health has directed medical professionals to collaborate with stakeholders, enhance monitoring protocols, and ensure timely reporting of any unusual developments.
Dr. Anuma emphasized: “We request your committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols.”
With the looming threat of the XEC variant, health officials are urging Nigerians to adhere to preventive measures such as vaccination, wearing masks, and maintaining physical distancing. They also stress the importance of regular handwashing and avoiding crowded spaces.
As the global fight against COVID-19 continues, the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding public health and mitigating the potential impacts of the XEC variant.
