PDP crisis worsens as Abdulrahman Mohammed takes over as acting national chairman
Tension heightened at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja on Monday as the party’s National Vice Chairman (North Central), Abdulrahman Mohammed, announced his assumption of office as Acting National Chairman amid a worsening leadership crisis.
Mohammed’s takeover followed his endorsement by the Samuel Anyanwu-led National Working Committee (NWC), which had earlier suspended the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba. The move was seen as a counteraction to their own suspension by the Damagum-led faction.
Before arriving at the PDP’s Wadata Plaza headquarters, Mohammed addressed supporters at the party’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) office, where he confirmed his new position and vowed to restore unity and discipline within the party.

“Today, we are taking responsibility to restore order and unity in our great party,” he declared. “The PDP belongs to its members, and no one individual can hold it hostage.”
Speaking later at a press briefing in Abuja, Mohammed read from a statement titled “A New Dawn”, lamenting the party’s decline and promising to heal internal divisions.
“We are all aware of the pitiable state of our party because of the actions and inactions of our leaders,” he said. “From being the ruling party for 16 years to becoming a weakened opposition, our story must change.”

He said he accepted the position “through the mercy of God and the instrumentality of critical stakeholders,” emphasizing his mission to restore internal democracy and strengthen the PDP’s structures nationwide.
“My responsibility as Acting National Chairman is to heal the wounds of our party, end factionalism, and rebuild our foundation,” Mohammed stated.

He promised to organise an all-inclusive national convention and conclude pending congresses across the country, assuring members that he would “return the PDP to its true owners — the Nigerian people.”
Calling for unity, Mohammed appealed to all party members to support his efforts to reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“I cannot do this task alone,” he admitted. “I need the support, prayers, and genuine commitment of all stakeholders. Consultations have begun, and soon, we will convene our National Executive Committee meeting.”
As of the time of his announcement, National Chairman Umar Damagum and his loyalists were absent from the party’s national secretariat
