Police arrest 2 women for selling newborn babies

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended two women for allegedly selling newborn babies.

The suspects, identified as Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, were arrested by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus stop, a key entry point into Lagos State. This action follows a tip-off from a good Samaritan.

According to Police spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the suspects were found in possession of two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.

Investigations revealed that the women were on their way to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos, a contact promised by the babies’ mother.

The suspects confessed to receiving N150,000 for the transportation of the babies, explaining that the mother sold them due to her inability to provide proper care.

The case has since been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, where the newborns are now under the care of a motherless babies’ home for medical evaluation and proper care.

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in this case. The arrested suspects were arraigned in court on Thursday.
