Police arrest husband of woman accused of sleeping with Jigawa commissioner

Story by Victor Itodo ABUH

After an Upper Sharia Court exonerated the Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Sankara, of adultery allegations, the Kano police arrested Nasir Buba, the estranged husband of the commissioner’s alleged lover, Tasleem Baba-Nabegu, on charges of cyberstalking.

Mr. Buba was apprehended outside his lawyer’s office on Tuesday, following the dismissal of his case against Mr. Sankara at the Shariah Court.

The controversy began when Mr Buba complained to the Kano State Hisbah operatives, accusing the commissioner of engaging in an extramarital affair with his wife.

This led to Mr. Sankara’s initial arrest. However, the Shariah Court dismissed the case on Monday after Judge Ibrahim Sarki-Yola cited findings from the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 1 office in Kano.

“The police investigation found no evidence to substantiate the allegations of adultery,” the judge ruled.

Following the court’s decision, the police arrested Mr Buba for allegedly using evidence extracted from his wife’s phone to support his claims.

A source familiar with the case expressed scepticism about the fairness of the proceedings, “It is obvious the police are biased in this case.

“Nasir has tendered incriminating videos, pictures, chats, and voices showing evidence of sexual affairs between the duo. It is strange how the police cleared the commissioner and then arrested the complainant for cyberstalking his wife.

When reached for comment, Kano State police spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa stated he was not yet briefed about the arrest.

“The arrest has not been brought to my attention. And remember, even the previous incident was handled at the AIG office, Zone 1.

“But I will investigate to confirm if the arrest was made or not,” Mr Kiyawa said.

Meanwhile, the Jigawa State Government has reinstated the embattled commissioner on Tuesday, signalling a swift return to his official duties.
