Police arrest Omoyele Sowore at Federal High Court after #FreeNnamdiKanu Protest

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was on Monday arrested by police operatives at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore, who had earlier led the #FreeNnamdiKanuProtest in the nation’s capital, was reportedly taken into custody shortly after attending proceedings related to the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The activist had fled the protest scene earlier in the day when security operatives arrested 13 demonstrators, including Kanu’s brother and lawyer. He later confirmed the arrests in a social media post.
Before his arrest, Sowore posted that he had met with Kanu Agabi, SAN, the lead counsel representing Nnamdi Kanu, who informed him that his team planned to withdraw from the case — a move he described as politically motivated.

According to eyewitnesses, Sowore was accosted by a police team as he exited the court premises and was asked to accompany them to the station. After some exchanges, he eventually complied.
A close associate of Sowore told Daily Trust that the activist had earlier received an invitation from the FCT Commissioner of Police and was preparing to honour it before the unexpected arrest.

“He was already scheduled to visit the police headquarters. I don’t understand why they were in such a hurry,” the associate said.
