Police in Anambra launch manhunt after deadly checkpoint attack

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt to capture those responsible for a deadly attack on a police checkpoint at Omata Junction, located on the Nnewi-Oba Road in the Idemili South Local Government Area.

The attack, which occurred at approximately 9:20 a.m. on Friday, claimed the life of one police officer and left another officer critically injured.

Reports indicate that the assailants targeted the checkpoint, using explosive devices to assault the officers stationed there. The motive for the attack remains unknown at this time.

In an official statement, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident. He revealed that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered a full-scale manhunt to track down and apprehend the attackers.

“The Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, has ordered manhunt operations on gunmen who attacked the police team around 9:20 a.m. on August 9, 2024, at a checkpoint at Omata Junction, Nnewi-Oba Road,” stated Ikenga.

The operation is being spearheaded by the Assistant Commissioner in charge of the Nnewi Area Command, who is working closely with local residents to identify and capture the perpetrators.

During the attack, one officer was fatally injured by an explosive device, while another sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

The police have since secured the area, and investigations are ongoing.
