Police in Bayelsa detain officer for alleged ₦10m extortion, reimburse victim 

The Nigerian Police Force Zone 16 in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, has detained an officer for allegedly extorting N10 million from a victim.

According to a statement from the zone 16 spokesperson, SP Gunn Ewhoborwo Emonema, the incident took place on September 17, 2024.

He said, “The new AIG for the zone, Adebola Ayinde Hamzat, ordered a swift investigation upon assuming office on October 21, leading to the recovery and return of the full amount on November 5.

“Hamzat, known for his integrity and commitment to eradicating corruption, personally oversaw the restitution of funds. The officers implicated have been in custody since October 30, facing disciplinary proceedings.

“The AIG has reiterated his zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, aligning with IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s directive for accountability across the force.”
