Police Inspector gunned down at checkpoint in Edo

An inspector attached to the Ekiadolor Area Command in Benin City, Edo State, was shot dead on Friday during a routine checkpoint operation, the Edo State Police Command has confirmed.

According to the police, gunmen in an unregistered black Lexus SUV with heavily tinted windows refused to stop at the checkpoint. As officers attempted to carry out a security check, one of the occupants allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding the inspector, who died at the scene.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident and launched a manhunt to apprehend the assailants. All available intelligence and operational resources have been deployed in the search.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report any information on the suspects or the vehicle involved via the command’s emergency hotlines. Security has been heightened across the state, particularly in anticipation of the yuletide season.

The Edo State Police Command described the attack as a “cowardly and criminal act” and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
