Police recall all VIP-attached officers nationwide back to base
The Special Protection Unit (SPU) of the Nigeria Police Force has directed all officers assigned to VIPs and special beats across the country to return to their bases immediately, in compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s recent directive.
The order was contained in an internal memo signed by Neji Veronica, Commanding Officer of SPU Base 16 in Lagos, and shared by the Presidency on X. The memo instructed all affected personnel to report back to base before the close of work on November 24.
“Sequel to the directive of Mr President and C-in-C on the withdrawal of police personnel attached to VIPs, the Commanding Officer directs with immediate effect the withdrawal of all SPU Base 16 personnel attached to VIPs/Beats across the federation,” the memo stated. Officers were warned to return without delay and attend a mandatory lecture parade the following day.

President Tinubu had earlier ordered the nationwide withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs, stating that individuals requiring security going forward must request armed protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
According to the Presidency, the move is designed to strengthen police presence in underserved communities, where many stations operate with limited manpower.
To further support the reform, Tinubu also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers and the upgrading of training facilities in partnership with state governments.
