Police reinstate Obasa’s security, withdraw Meranda’s ahead of ex-Speaker’s return

Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was impeached as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is set to make a comeback.

Journalists report that his security details have been reinstated, while those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, his former deputy, have been withdrawn. Meranda had assumed the role of Speaker following Obasa’s impeachment, making her the first woman to hold the position in the state’s history.

Although Meranda has not yet officially resigned, her fate was reportedly sealed over the weekend during a meeting with key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders who intervened in the ongoing crisis at the House of Assembly. The meeting included APC leaders such as former National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), along with some lawmakers.

Sources say that during the meeting, it was decided that Meranda should vacate her seat, with the resolution largely favoring Obasa’s return. “In truth, what they said was that Obasa’s removal was illegal, and the lawmakers were directed to reinstate him,” insiders revealed.

The timeline for the House to reconvene and implement these changes remains unclear. Meranda had earlier adjourned the plenary indefinitely after a commotion broke out in the assembly, triggered by an invasion by operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS).
