Portable arraigned for assault, granted ₦2m bail

Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, was arraigned on Thursday before a Magistrate Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State, for allegedly assaulting government officials.

Portable had reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) at the Lagos Command on Wednesday morning, following a declaration by the Ogun Command that he was wanted. He was subsequently transferred to the Ogun State Command’s headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

He faced five charges in the Isabo Magistrate Court, including conspiracy, assault, unlawful detention, and being armed with cutlasses and firearms. The charges also involved conduct likely to cause harm. Portable pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

In a related case, nine of Portable’s associates were arraigned on February 6 for similar charges. These individuals—Nurudeen Warris (21), Adetola Alashe (25), Samuel Adeleke (28), Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19), Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20), Gospel Kanu (20), Precious Ohiegebo (19), Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27), and Fatimo Muhammed (26)—faced charges of felony, assault, unlawful detention, being armed, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. They allegedly assaulted and obstructed three Town Planning officers—Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero—while the officers were performing their official duties at Odogwu Bar, which is owned by Portable.

After pleading not guilty, Portable’s lawyer, Oluwatoyin Ayodele, requested bail for the singer, assuring the court that he was now remorseful and had learned his lesson.

Magistrate O L Oke granted Portable bail in the sum of ₦2 million with one surety in the same amount. The case was adjourned to March 5 for trial.
