Prices of millet, maize, others drop as costs of beans fluctuate at popular grain market

The prices of food commodities at the grain market in Ngalda Town of Fika local government area of Yobe State have experienced mixed trends, with a slight increase in the price of beans, while the costs of millet, maize, and sorghum have dropped.

A market survey conducted on Monday revealed that the price of new millet currently ranges between ₦49,000 and ₦50,000, while Kaura sorghum is selling for ₦48,000 to ₦50,000. Similarly, white sorghum is priced between ₦40,000 and ₦41,000. However, the price of Kwakwai sorghum remains unlisted, as does Wala sorghum (Wuyo).

Meanwhile, the cost of white beans (large) has risen to ₦95,000 – ₦101,000, while the smaller variety is going for ₦90,000 – ₦95,000. Brown beans are currently the most expensive in this category, selling for ₦100,000 – ₦105,000.

Other items in the market include tobacco seeds, which are priced between ₦20,000 and ₦23,000, and mixed sesame seeds, which stand at ₦60,000. Gurguzu (mixed grain waste) is being sold for ₦25,000, while Gurguzu Zobo (Roselle waste) has no listed price.

For maize varieties, wedding maize (a special variety) is selling for ₦45,000 – ₦47,000. On the higher end of the market, Gangala (Gujjiya nuts) is currently priced at ₦160,000.

Neptune Prime learned that the fluctuations in food prices have been attributed to market forces, supply chain dynamics, and seasonal changes.
