Prince William reflects on ‘Brutal’ year as Kate returns to public life
Prince William has shared the emotional toll of what he described as the “hardest” year of his life, as both his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and his father, King Charles III, battled cancer.
Kate, who completed chemotherapy earlier this year, will make a significant return to public life this weekend, attending key royal events alongside King Charles to remember Britain’s war dead. These events, which include the Festival of Remembrance concert and the wreath-laying ceremony at the Cenotaph, mark Kate’s first major royal appearance since her cancer treatment.
Speaking to reporters after a visit to South Africa for his Earthshot Prize initiative, Prince William, 42, reflected on the difficult year. “Honestly, it’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year of my life,” he said. “Trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.”
The royal family has faced a series of challenges this year, with King Charles, 75, diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer and undergoing treatment. Kate, also 42, revealed in March that she was battling cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. Both have made limited public appearances as they continue their recoveries.

Despite the personal challenges, William expressed pride in how his family members have handled their health battles. “I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done,” he said. “But from a personal family point of view, it’s been brutal.”
This year, William has also focused on his philanthropic work, including the Earthshot Prize, which honours environmental initiatives, and Homewards, a programme to address homelessness in the UK. However, he acknowledged the emotional strain, noting that despite appearances, this year has been far from relaxing. “It’s more a case of just crack on, and you’ve got to keep going,” he remarked.
As William continues to navigate personal and professional challenges, his family also faces ongoing tensions, particularly with his estranged brother, Prince Harry, with whom he has not spoken for two years.
Kate’s return to public duties marks a hopeful step in the royal family’s recovery, even as they continue to cope with their personal struggles.
